- Believe: First off, don’t panic. Set your mind right. Writing a press release will not be the be all, end all of life. It may be a method that will work for some and it may be a method that might not work for others. Willing to give it a try? Proceed to the next number if the answer is yes.
- One has to have the talent or resource to write: There are two options here- be the writer or ask another person to write. If one can write decently, feel free to try. Writing a press release is supposed to be fun. Do research and check which press releases seem to garner more attention. Learn and see what methods can be employed. One writing style can work for a particular industry but another may not. Don’t forget to start with understanding what a press release is. Feel free to type ‘what is press release’ in the search engine for more references.
- Understand when to pay or not to pay: If option number one (being the writer) is not the best course, try hiring a copywriter. PR firms can help at this stage. Another option is to get PR websites to help out. Some charge for a fee but some are free. Free PR websites are highly discouraged by some because it doesn’t give much assurance compared to getting work done because it’s paid. It’s not a bad idea to try things for free though. When in doubt, experiment. Even your friends can be resources, no need to pay (hopefully).
- Don’t focus on yourself: Editors and PR websites are interested in what the readers want so it’s important to put yourself in their shoes. Think of a way to capture their attention because their end goal is the same- to capture the attention of the readers.
- Create true delivery: Writing well and making it sound good can altogether be acknowledged when what is written is actually what one delivers. (E.g. Make sure that the promised shoes for charity were actually given- in short, make sure that it happens.)
