It all started around the mid 1990's when the internet started gaining popularity. The effect? Sending good quality content will help get more exposure. Of course, make it short and clear- not everyone has enough time to read. Moreover, this determines whether some PR sites will actually accept some contents. They wouldn’t want to upload something that will degrade their credibility. Same goes for paid PR websites.

Wait for them to release the story. It might take a day or two but if it's really taking a long time, follow up and see if there's a problem. If people ask and clarify, they even learn a few tips on how to improve releases.

On a final note, tight budget or not, feel free to try other avenues as you include a PR website into the mix. Although digital media is gaining more popularity, it's not just the only medium available. Good ideas that generate a lot of interest from people don't just suddenly occur. Sometimes it may take a lot of patience, perseverance & endurance to make things happen.
