Normally, all business entities or companies generate certain perceptions from their clients. Because of that, they usually hire a PR company or PR department to assist them in getting the perfect image they want, so long as the price is right.
Nevertheless, there are some organizations that publish ethical codes such as The Chartered Institute of Public Relation or Public Relations Society of America in order to maintain some semblance of unmentioned conformity - showing that there are good guys out there who want to do their job right. Despite this, many question the sincerity and validity of a PR practitioner working for the company itself. However, if you're ready to take on this daunting task of letting people know that being a spokesperson doesn't mean that one only works for the company; one also has a voice as a concerned individual in that company (and a very big one) then you're in the right track.
For a person planning to pursue a profession in this line of work, what possible qualifications one must have?
Basic Qualifications:
- Education: This doesn't mean a college degree. If one can get experience from a club (organization) or a part-time work, education that comes from a real-life experience can also be considered "education".
- Endurance: PR can really be a stressful job. It is a constant dialogue amongst people who have different interests and stakes. It's important for one to be able to reconcile all these interests. Moreover, showing concern for each idea because you really care is a must. Sincerity can't be faked. Unable to become sincere about a situation? Meditate. It can mean prayer or calling the Higher Being; but the point is think deeply and take responsibility.
- Ability to Create the Right Network: A PR company can also be in charge of promotions for an account. It is important to be able to know how to create a strong network that care during these situations.
- Moral Groundwork: As a PR company, one's job is to also share information to the public. Admittedly, not everything can be black & white. Laying down a simple statement or a proper "yes" or "no" might not always be wise. Explaining one's decision based on the situation is very important. At the same time, knowing when to say "no" or "I'm not going to say that" means that you know what needs to be said.
- Being a Team-player: In some PR companies, an account can be handled but not limited to three people (a copywriter, publicist & graphic artist). More often than not, one is required to work with various types of people with different personalities. Being able to adjust and promote love and faith in a small team shows how capable one is as a practitioner because big things start small.
- Mentality: One thing to note- mistakes can happen once in a while as much as we hope it doesn't... It's important to have the right mindset. A "you can do this" mentality. It's also important to surround yourself with people who can support you in case anything hits the fan.
